Channing Tatum Was Once Rumored To Portray Gambit On The Silver Screen
Quite a few actors have portrayed various iconic Marvel superheroes over the years, even before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a thing. This especially holds true for Hugh Jackman, who portrayed Wolverine long before the MCU started.
He was also part of the incredibly abysmal 2009’sX-Men Origins: Wolverine, which also starred Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. In case you didn’t know,Channing Tatumwas initially considered for the role of Gambit inX-Men Origins: Wolverinebut was unavailable, leading to Taylor Kitsch taking the part.

According toSuperherohype, in 2014, Tatum signed on for a standalone Gambit film afterX-Men Originsfailed to launch prequels. The project faced numerous challenges, with directors like Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski coming and going. Tatum even considered co-directing with Reid Carolin after Verbinski’s departure. However, when The Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox in March 2019, the Gambit movie was officially cancelled two weeks later.

The mutants are set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Univers in the coming year, with appearances on both Disney+ and the big screen. One of the initial offerings isX-Men ’97, slated for release around April-May 2024. Serving as a direct sequel to the instant classic 90s animated series, the project will extend the narrative of this universe’s version of the X-Men, picking up from the conclusion of the original series in 1997.
According toThe Cosmic Circus, it was reported that discussions for a potential expanded role of mutants in the upcoming phase of the Multiverse Saga are already underway. The aim is to establish mutants more meaningfully in Earth-616 before the saga concludes.

Several ideas are being considered, including a Mutants series on Disney+ that focuses on individual stories for various mutants, akin to the format ofWhat If…?There’s also contemplation of an X-Men film under the Marvel Studios brand beforeAvengers: Secret Wars. Another concept involves anAvengers vs. X-Menfilm featuring members of the 616 Avengers and X-Men, though it’s still in the early stages of discussion, as the X-Men have not yet entered the 616 universes.
What we can gather from all this is that if Marvel is actually making a Disney+ show where individual mutant stories will be told, then Channing Tatum can still play Gambit, or voice the character if it turns out to be an animated show. It is not known if it will be an anthology or not. After all, it could be individual, separate shows on each mutant. Only time will tell whether Tatum will get to finally portray Gambit somehow.
