Theshow has lived up to the hype of the previous show and has already become a series that has resonated well with the fans of the 2017 show. One of the primary factors behind the success ofNocturneis that the series introduced new characters that aided in hooking theattention of the show.
The characters of Richter Belmont and Annette play themainroles in the series, and it primarily follows their journey.However, the writer ofCastlevania: Nocturnehad tomake surethat the protagonist did not become a knockoff version of the vampire hunter from the previousshow,and ensured that the two characters had differentsets ofqualities.

Trevor Belmont was the central character in Netflix’sCastlevania,who was a descendant of the Belmont clan, renowned for their vampire-hunting prowess. Throughout the series, the character is showcased as a warrior, burdened with his family legacy and personal demons.
Even though his journey as a vampire hunter began with resentment and self-doubt, he slowly transitioned into an honorable protector of the weak, and carrying his family lineage. The character of Trevor Belmont wasabsolutelyperfect; hence, the writers of the show were worried that in the sequel, they don’t create the same character in a different avatar.

During an exclusive interview withComingSoon, Kevin Kolde, the co-showrunner of the show was asked about the factors that made Richter Belmont a convincing protagonist of the series.
Kolde stated that they had to focus on a number of factors that prevented them from copying the character from the previous show. He said,
There are a bunch of things that were exciting for us about Richter. One was his age. He’s younger than Trevor, so obviously we’re looking for a character that’s not going to be Trevor 2.0, so Richter’s age was important.
Same with the time period and Richter’s upbringing, which were of interest to us. But also Richter, in gaming culture, is probably the most well-known Belmont character.
Even though the different ideas went into making him different from Trevor Belmont in the follow-up series. The writers did a great job in making both characters contrastive but their complexity and sense of duty as a Belmont vampire hunter was present.
Castlevania: Nocturne’sDirector Talks About The Character Growth of Its Protagonist
In the same interview with ComingSoon, Sam Deats and Adam Deats were present, the interviewer asked Adam Deats to talk about the growth of the protagonist as a character throughout the show.
Deats explained that Richter Belmont’s childhood trauma and family expectations gave him a difficult time since childhood, and he had to deal with obstacles more directly than he was expected to. He said,
He starts at a low point. He’s just a child and experiences very real trauma very early on and has to go to extended family and survive that. So a lot of his character is oriented around the fact that that’s following him around and he has to deal with it a little bit more directly than he expects to.
Adam Deats further continued that he believes that Trevor Belmont’s life in the previous series was a tidbit different, majorly because he was a“reluctant hero”but in the sequel, they have focused more on the“growing up”aspect. He added,
I think that Trevor’s life in previous seasons is a bit different than that. He’s very much a reluctant hero, and in this case, this is a lot about growing up. I think that’s a bit of a coming of age story in some respect.
Nevertheless, both characters are equally iconic and fans love them because of their character development and how beautifully they have been written throughout the story, adding another star to the series.
