Early gameplay footage of the canceledDead Rising5, otherwise known as Dead Rising: Dia de Los Muertos, has leakedthrough a portfolioof a game designer involved in the project. It also features gameplay details about the new loot container system, a traversal gym for level design, and an early prototype of the jungle level created in 2017.
The Dead Rising franchise has been buried in silence since the launch of Dead Rising 4 in 2016, with no indication that it would return anytime soon. One of the game designers attached to the now-scrapped Dead Rising 5 shared a wide array of content and gameplay footage taken from the early version. It showcases a few scenes of the protagonist Chuck Greene fighting against zombies and interacting with NPCs.

According to the portfolio, Dead Rising 5 would replace the ground loot system that had existed for years with a new container-based system, which allowed developers to contextualize different drops and clean up the environment. The developer explained that the rendering was extremely taxing on the resources, so they sought to change it with a loot container system. Early footage unearthed through the portfolio also showcases a few locations that served as bases and camps inhabited by enemies and bosses.
It appears that Chuck was set to return to Mexico City for the follow-up title that has never seen the light of day. As seen in the footage, the Mexican-inspired settings could not get past the rendering stage. However, the developer provided additional details about the Camp level, saying, “The jungle level with plenty of zombies to kill and several gang bases to raid leading up to a final boss! I also created the fence spawners, bush spawners, and trunk spawners tech for this level.”
There is no sign of a new Dead Rising game coming out anytime soon. The latest entry in the action-survival series, Dead Rising 4, is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
