Before launchingCall of Duty: Warzoneas a standalone multiplayer-only title,Call of Duty: Black Ops 4was the very first entry of the series without a story-driven campaign. However, regarding the latest leaked video from the game’s canceled campaign’s gameplay, it seems Treyarch had some plans for a story-driven experience, though it hasn’t survived the development process.

Despite lacking a single-player campaign,Black Ops 4managed to bring a solid and fast-paced multiplayer experience, along withthe series' first Battle Royale mode. However, even with great success in the multiplayer section, some of the old fans of the franchise still can’t forgive Treyarch for delisting the campaign mode. That said, recently it’s turned out that Treyarch actually did have some ambitious ideas for a story-driven mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, but it just didn’t fit in the schedule for the game’s launch.

According to the leaked gameplay footage ofBlack Ops 4onReddit, we get to see a mission that we haven’t seen in the final version of the game so far. As the video shows, the objective is to “Find The Aquilus CEO” which seems to be a story-driven mission that never appeared in the final build of the game. It’s yet-to-be-known what was the actual storyline behind the canceled campaign, and how Treyarch decided to exclude it from the game.

In 2019,Call of Duty: Modern Warfaresomehow managed to cover the lack of story inBlack Ops 4by ignoring the Zombie mode and bringing Captain Price back in a brief story that’s worth to give it a shot. That being said, the series' progress in multiplayerwithModern WarfareandWarzoneis too outstandingcompared to what Infinity Ward did in the campaign mode.

The upcoming mainline title in theCODfranchise is rumored to bea soft reboot of theBlack Opsseriesset in the Cold War era.
