Last month, Ubisoft sparked fresh rumours of aBeyond Good & Evilremaster when it pulled the original game fromSteam. Thankfully, fans didn’t have to wait long until a special 20th Anniversary Edition of the classic 2003 title was released, featuring 4K 60 FPS support with improved graphics, audio, and new content.
Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition can be purchased on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store for £17.99 GBP / $19.99 USD / $26.99 CDN, with a physical edition also set to release on July 12. Unfortunately, the Steam version is causing quite the controversy as fans are calling out the plethora of negative requirements that come with the 20th Anniversary Edition.

Other triple-a mobile ports, such as Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, and Death Stranding, are also said to have “bombed.”
Unlike the original 2003 version of Beyond Good & Evil, the 20th Anniversary Edition comes with multiple different requirements and features. The first is Denuvo, a system that “hardens existing DRM systems,” according to Denuvo. However, the reason this system causes so much controversy among gamers is due to themultiple claimsandteststhat the system negatively affects some titles.

Since the publication of this article, Denuvo has reached out to DualShockers to clarify some of the controversies surrounding its systems. We have included the company’s statement below.
In a statement sent to DualShockers, Denuvo attempted to clarify these claims:

“Denuvo Anti-Tamper has a minimal impact on game performance, as it is designed to only run during game start-up and loading screens. Like any software, source code changes, which could lead to anti-tamper code affecting performance-critical areas - however, such changes are usually caught by the QA departments of the game developers.”
“Regardless of our successful product delivery as part of anti-piracy measures, the remaining integration process and code alignment are beyond our control,” Denuvo told DualShockers.

The second requirement that comes with the 20th Anniversary Edition is the mandatory linking of users' Ubisoft account, meaning you will be unable to play Beyond Good & Evil unless you link your Steam account to your Ubisoft account. Oh, and you’ll also need to have Ubisoft’s launcher downloaded and installed for the game to open and run.
These requirements, along with an increased price tag and removal of the original version, have sparked controversy among fans. Some have even been pointing out that despite the “updated achievements” statement in the game’s description, these aren’t available on Steam and are only through Ubisoft Connect.

The above post has garnered over 4,200 upvotes in less than 19 hours, meaning the delisting of the original Beyond Good & Evil and the updated requirements for the 20th Anniversary Edition have clearly irked thousands of gamers. But there’s an easy solution, according to many of the responses.
“Don’t buy it, only thing that helps,“one usersaid in response.Another useroffered up a similar solution, saying, “Let’s put Ubisoft out of business by not supporting their bullshit consumer practices. Stop buying Ubisoft products.”
Others noted that the original Beyond Good & Evil can still bepurchased on PC via GoGfor its original price point and no added requirements. So, if you really don’t want to support the addition of DRM and account linking, you’re only options are to either not purchase the game, or purchase it over on GoG.
