Studio oversight, for any production, often gets a bad rep when it fails to deliver even when it has great characters on its hands. A recent example would be the DCEU, which found itself largely botched at the hands of Warner Brothers in the bid to chase the same trend that was making the MCU butt loads of money.

Star Wars, at least according to fans, has largely been plagued by heavy studio oversight as well. However, comments from the likes of Jon Favreau have revealed that that might not necessarily be true, at least for entries not in the mainline Skywalker Saga. Now, Tony Gilroy, the creator ofAndor, has revealed that he did not receive any notes from Lucasfilm for the second season of the show. While this might just work out in favor of Gilroy, it must be noted that no studio oversight could also mean a very horrible product.
No studio oversight is the reasonJoker: Folie à Deuxended up the way it did
WhileJokerhad very steady oversight from Warner Brothers, while also working with Todd Phillips’ creative vision, they managed to make a product that fans were very excited about seeing. However, given the success of the film, WB decided to let the second film go ahead with minimal studio oversight, which led to the second film that failed to wow critics or even fans.

There are concerns that something similar could befall Andor, but it remains to be seen whether that will be the case. Season One of the show has been widely well-received by fans and critics alike, despite the low investment in a character like Andor. Through its brilliant acting and tight script, the show was able to make a well-knit narrative that interested fans. It remains to be seen how Gilroy will operate without studio oversight, and whether Disney had the right idea with Season One or not.
Disney has fumbled with lesser studio oversight before
Disney had some considerable oversight when it came to the third Thor film. WhileTaika Waititi‘s Thor film worked in theatres and performed well at the box office, the fourth film, with considerably more creative freedom, ended up being a film that failed to please fans.
“That’s our goal this time”: Tony Gilroy Wants Andor Season 2 to Redeem His Big Failure But it’s a Bad Idea for the Best Star Wars Project
This was largely attributed to the fact that Taika Waititi ended up making the character a little too unserious, which focused on the comedy more than it did on the action. Not only that, it also failed to communicate the sincerity of other characters in the film, making it overcrowded with jokes and insincere dialogue.
This could end up being the case forAndoras well, however unlikely it might seem.Tony Gilroyseems to be a far more serious creator when compared to Taika Waititi, but the serious political connotations of the first season could be hard to build on. Gilroy could also end up alienating the audience by making the material too dense, which could have been more palatable with oversight from Disney.

AndorSeason 3 hits Disney+ on June 01, 2025.
