The anime adaptation of the award-winning fantasy adventure manga Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has received anew teaser trailer, confirming its fall premiere and revealing its cast and staff. The project will be directed by Keiichirō Saitō (Bocchi the Rock! director) at the renowned anime studio Madhouse (Hunter X Hunter,Death Note,One Punch Man).
The manga began serialization in the Weekly Shounen Sunday in April 2020, and has since been published in 9 volumes (or 87 chapters). The manga continues to be on an award-winning streak, having won several awards in recent years, such as the 2021 New Creator Prize for the 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the 14th Manga Taisho Award. It was also nominated for Best Shōnen Manga at Kodansha’s 45th and 46th annual Manga Awards.

Those who enjoyTo Your Eternitymay find the story intriguing, as they share similarities in portraying an immortal being (here an elf) who travels extensively, experiencing different time periods and observing how humanity evolves over time. While the story focuses on exploration and lacks significant action, it contains plenty of introspection on the transient nature of humanity, as well as a bittersweet tone that is skillfully conveyed in the trailer.
In addition to Keiichirō Saitō, Tomohiro Suzuki (ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept, One-Punch Man) will be handling the character designs, and popular composer Evan Call, who worked on Violet Evergarden,Muv-Luv Alternative, and Schwarzesmarken, will be composing the music for the series. Atsumi Tanezaki (who plays Anya inSpy X Family) will play the role of the titular protagonist Frieren.
“Every day, I think about the work and what kind of visuals would make it the best anime for viewers. For Frieren, it may be a short time, but it seems like an irreplaceable time for me,“says director Saitoto celebrate the anime announcement. “When I read the original work, all my favorite elements were included, and I imagined the music while reading. Even after starting to create the music, Frieren’s story touched my heartstrings many times,” adds Evan Call.
Madhouse is a studio that many anime fans grew up with and is known for producing high-quality animation with stunning visuals and compelling stories. The studio’s works such as Death Note, Trigun, Parasyte and the first season of One-Punch Man are considered some of the best in the industry.
