Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a return to the open-world format forUbisoft’s14th main entry in the franchise, sharing a similar map size toOriginsbut implementing a few unique features to keep the content progressive. Players will be able to control both protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, andmap marker refinementwill encourage exploration and agency. However, fans aren’t 100% on board with a change to the assassins’ eagle eyes.

The much-anticipated setting of feudal Japan has been in the making for years, and Ubisoft even had analternative plotin the works before the historically accurate Yasuke took the spotlight. As the franchise progresses, gameplay changes are inevitable to keep players on their toes, but when it comes to Eagle Vision, the fandom isn’t ready to let go of the bird of prey drone companions as Shadows revives an older mechanic.

Despite being a single-player game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows requires an internet connection to play, and fans aren’t happy.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Waves Goodbye To Bird Of Prey Companions

In a recentreportby IGN, listing “40 details you need to know” about Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it was revealed in the “Stealth and Parkour” section that Eagle Vision would be making a return, allowing the assassins to “spot silhouettes of NPCs through walls.” It was also noted that enemies would be highlighted red, while “new servants” would be orange.

Additionally, the list confirmed that the bird of prey drone companion featured in Origins,Odyssey, andValhallawas “not available” in Shadows, meaning players would need to embark on their own “reconnaissance work” when targeting objectives, marking targets, and scouting out areas.

Any major change is bound to have teething problems within the community, and a majority of social media users were quick to air their disappointment. One comment stated the feathered companions were more logical than supernatural abilities, stating“Nah man! I actually loved it. I thought it was an incredible spin on the mechanic and made more sense overall than some magical power.”

Another onlooker mentioned eagles would make sense in Japanese lore, saying“That’s pretty naff, Tokugawa loved his birds of prey, and he wasn’t alone, that should’ve been done to continue the series.” Finally, a third comment thought the birds were one of the franchise’s best assets, saying“Why not both like Mirage. Removing the bird of prey drone seems like a stepdown. It’s one of the best feature coz you can see the beauty of the landscape from above while on horse is auto riding.”

On the other hand, a handful of players were ready to accept the change, as one user thought the feature should have remained in Origins, stating“The bird-drone feature should’ve stayed exclusive to Bayek. After that it just felt like a reskinned Senu over and over. Glad it’s gone.” Another fan thought the feature was a bit silly, saying“I liked the bird system but it seemed kinda ridiculous that all these different characters just so happened to have bird companions so I’m glad it’s going away for now.”

Social media was also alight with tributes to players' favorite birds from the open-world games after knowledge of the Eagle Vision’s return was confirmed. Senu from Origins was, of course, a beloved favorite, but there was also a lot of love for Enkidu from the last title,Mirage.
