The annual Darkening of Tristram event has returned toDiablo III, with the portal that takes you to Old Tristram (the originalDiablo) is now open for those who dare to fight through all sixteen levels from the game that started it all.
Since 2017 Blizzard has included the Darkening of Tristram event to run through all of January, which begins when cultists appear across the game map ofDiablo IIIand an Adventure Mode quest has you hunting them down, leading to the location of the portal that will take you to the past and allow you to fight your way to Hell and once again face off against Diablo. After using the portal to visit Old Tristram you can enter the cathedral and fight through randomized dungeons against familiar enemies in a throwback to the firstDiablore-created in full inDiablo III. While the environment and enemies may be familiar, some of the loot will not as Blizzard has included some new loot that can be earned bycompleting activitiesin the anniversary event for things such as, “transmogrification effects, achievements, portraits, pets, and more.” This event even includes some graphical filters to make the game appear more like its 1996 progenitor.
The cultists first started appearing inDiablo IIIon June 19, 2025 at 4:00 P.M. PST and the portal opened up yesterday at the same time. The Darkening of Tristram event will last until June 30, 2025 at 4:00 P.M. PST so make sure to fight through the dungeons, kill the three bosses, and once again take down Diablo before the event expires and you have to wait for 2020 to participate again. This event is on both PC and console versions ofDiablo III, even the Nintendo Switch which received its version of the loot-game on July 22, 2025.
Diablohas had some shake ups this past year, asBlizzard’s CFOleft recently, multiplegamesmoved in to capitalize on angry fans after the announcement ofDiablo Immortal, internal projects were cancelled, and Blizzard reportedly pulled aDiablo 4reveal since its still not ready to be shown or announced officially. Hopefully Blizzard can bounce back with some of itsother internal projects, whether it beDiablo 4or something different.
