In the film, Garfield’s Tobias and Pugh’s Almut run into each other, and they begin exploring love. The couple is put through challenging times when Almut gets diagnosed with cancer. For her role, Pugh had to shave her head.

TheOppenheimeractress revealed that losing her hair sent her body into a bit of trauma. According to Pugh, it was a bold decision that also reflected some of the changes in her real life. Her co-star Garfield was tasked with shaving her head, which he found to be a challenging job.

During an interview with British Vogue, Pugh revealed that she experienced a bit of trauma when she lost a crucial part of her body. Pugh shared that losing the hair was bizarre and went on to explain how many religions considered it a sacred part of the body.

She also shared a popular belief that hair stores people’s memories, dreams, and history. She also had a physical reaction to it, as she felt cold all the time. She shared that many people on set tried to touch her shaved head, which felt so alive. Pugh shared withBritish Vogue:
In many religions, hair is the most precious thing on the body – it’s where you store your memories and your dreams and your history. (Shaving) it was really bizarre. My head was so sensitive and so many people were trying to touch it and it was so alive. My body went into a bit of trauma from it. I was cold all the time.

Andrew Garfieldshared that he felt“privileged”to be tasked with the job of shaving Pugh’s head. He shared that he was nervous about the job as he didn’t want to destroy the head of one of the best actors of the generation. He shared that it made for an intimate scene in the film. He also praised Pugh’s well-shaped head, which made his task easier. He shared with British Vogue:
What if I somehow destroyed the head of one of the best actors of her generation? It was terrifying, but ultimately it was a very beautiful, intimate scene to shoot and thank God she has such a nicely shaped melon.

I was going through so many (aesthetic) iterations when I was also going through life decisions. I was like, ‘Cool, well I don’t look like me. I’m changed. I’m changing.’ Looking back on that summer, I was growing into a new thing.

During a chat withStudioCanalat TIFF, Garfield shared that his role needed someone with an open heart and a lot of vulnerability. He also shared that she needed someone as talented as Pugh. She shared that she had this birthing scene in a bathtub for whichshe wished she had a baby to show.
