WhenAvatar: Fire and Ashwas first announced, all of us saw the memes and made jokes about the Fire Nation’s invasion. It seemed like apart from sharing its name, James Cameron’s Avatar was primed to pick some plot points from Nickelodeon’s critically acclaimed and much belovedAvatar: The Last Airbenderseries.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, starring Gordon Cormier as Aang.

James Cameron’s Avataris a very potent and rigorous exercise in worldbuilding, be it the constructed language that the characters speak, the speculative biology of the planet that is brilliantly rendered, or the various cultures that inhabit the unexplored parts of the planet, which subsequent sequels are going to show audiences. However, fans cannot help but see some parallels betweenJames Cameron’s AvatarandAvatar: The Last Airbender, especially after the latest reveal of Peylak of the Wind Traders.

The Wind Trader looks like Pandora’s version of The Air Nomads

Peylak, the character revealed inEmpire Magazine, is set to star inAvatar: Fire and Ash, played byDavid Thewlis. One of the most striking things about the character revealed was his orange robes, which fans are convinced are inspired byAvatar: The Last Airbender. Given that the Wind Traders use Medusae to travel, a species of humongous flying jelly-fish creatures, the parallels with the Sky Bisons of the Air Nomads have made it that much more convincing to fans, one Avatar possibly has elements inspired by the other.

its on purpose at this point, right?pic.twitter.com/xNlpXgHASO

A still from M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender

So they literally copied from the other avatar lol

The orange robes, the flying beasts of burden, and the nomadic lifestyle that has been described for the Wind Traders have people wondering whether this is an intentional parallel or just a coincidence that keeps on getting deeper. Further, given that the Fire Na’vi is set to be the chief antagonist of the film, the movie is simply not beating the ‘and then, the Fire Nation attacked’ allegations.

James Cameron’s Avatarwas the reason whyThe Last Airbenderdid not have Avatar as the title.

The Nickelodeon showAvatar: The Last Airbendercame way before James Cameron decided to release his ownAvatar. However, the film was released pretty close to the James Cameron project, and producers were concerned about using theAvatartitle for the film. Thus, a decision was made to call the filmThe Last Airbender, which dropped the ‘Avatar’ part of the titleto avoid confusion, given that Cameron’s project ended up grossing a whopping $2.6 billion at the box office.

James Cameron Isn’t Beating the Allegations: ‘Avatar 3’ Introducing Wind Traders Is Making ‘The Last Airbender’ Inspiration Too Real

Shyamalan’sThe Last Airbenderhad a lot of issues, from casting choices that proved to be very controversial, to dialogue and story that seemed all over the place. This led to a very poor critical response to the film, with fans similarly focused on not acknowledging the film at all. Needless to say, this brought an end to the planned trilogy, which would have probably covered the three books of the show, one for each film.
