The heist movie genre has seen many films set in different places. Ben Affleck’sThe Townwas set in the middle of a Red Sox game,Oceans Elevenheist was during a boxing match in a casino, and the latest from Lionsgate1992puts a heist in the middle of the Rodney King Verdict protests. TheTyrese Gibson-led film sees him play Mercer, a fresh out-of-jail employee who finds himself and his son in the middle of a heist.

1992Review
I remember seeing this trailer at the end of last year and being intrigued by the premise. Heist movies are one of my favorite genres, and if done right, they can be instant classics. With1992set amid the uprising protests post-Rodney King verdict, the film’s tone is strong and has an unwavering message that is heartbreaking at its core.
It’s both daring and insane to deliver a script like1992because you have the tall task of not making light of this larger-than-life uprising while presenting a movie worthy of watching. Co-writers Sascha Penn and Ariel Vromen weave the verdict in and out of the story but make the central focus on the struggling dad attempting to raise his son to be better than himself. Penn and Vromen allowed the atmosphere of the protests to tell the story without forcing things to be too Hollywood.

Fast and Furious Franchise Ranked – Where Does Fast X Land?
Tyrese Gibson can often be overlooked acting-wise. He is most notably known for his role as Roman Pierce in theFast and the Furiousfranchise. However, if you go back to the early days of Gibson’s body of work inFour BrothersandBaby Boy,you know his ability to act. Gibson, without a shadow of a doubt, delivers the best performance of his career. Within the role of Mercer, Gibson is forced to take on the many layers that highlight his acting chops.
Has there been a better actor who plays villains the way Ray Liotta does? In his last role, Liotta plays the antagonist, Lowell, a no-nonsense guy who doesn’t care about anything or anyone. He took over the film in the second half and did what he did best, be an asshole. Liotta has always been ol reliable for directors and will be missed.

Director Ariel Vromen builds the aura around Mercer with precision. We quickly learn that he is fresh out of prison and trying to find his ways, but we discover who Mercer is while watching a situation unfold inside a gas station with two kids and seeing that he is known around the block as an OG. Vromen allowed the audience to build upon this character with his surroundings so that when it came time for him to get down to business, you believed what Mercer was capable of doing.
The film has several faults that are often expected in these types of independent movies. It falls into many of the cliche traps of a heist movie that doesn’t feel fresh or unique enough. Vromen paints himself into a corner that leads to a buildup in the third act, where he doesn’t know how to make the final turn to land the ending, and because of that, the film suffers. The ending is predictable and a bit too cookie-cutter for me.

Is1992Worth Watching?
Is1992a movie that you should rush out to theaters to see? No. However,1992is the perfect film to pop in on a Friday night to rent off VOD and watch and enjoy. The tone of the film is heavy, and many people will question the purpose of utilizing this moment within this movie, but Vromen’s ability to use it and not exploit it allows it to breathe in its own right. On top of that, Tyrese Gibson acts his ass off, and that alone should be worthy of checking this movie out.
