George R.R. Martin Badly Wanted Peter Dinklage As Tyrion Lannister
During his interview withTIFFvia YouTube, writerGeorge R.R. Martinshared the actors who were so perfect for theirGame of Thronesroles, and one of them isPeter Dinklage. He revealed that the actor had no audition tapes whatsoever and the team did not ask for anyone else.
“For Tyrion, Peter Dinklage, you know, that was the one role where we didn’t audition anybody. We didn’t read anybody. There are no tapes of other people reading Tyrion’s roles that will ever surface anywhere because we made no auditions.”
Martin said that they offered the part ofTyrion Lannisterto Dinklage and they made sure he would accept it because he had no one else in mind to occupy the role.
“We just said, ‘We got to get Peter Dinklage’, and we went out and made an offer to Peter Dinklage, and we persuaded him to take the role, and that’s worked out well.”
Indeed, Dinklage delivered his performance so well that he emerged as one of the most popular and fan-favorite characters in the show. His character development also became a significant plot in the series.
